Implementing Practical PPE Financing Solutions for Epidemics and Catastrophic Pandemics

Senior leaders from governments, development finance institutions, international organizations, regional health bodies, technical experts & academia, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector will gather to discuss strategies and steps for implementation of practical PPE financing solutions for epidemics and catastrophic pandemics.

This workshop is organized by the G20 High Level Independent Panel on Financing Pandemic Preparedness and Response, for which the National Academy of Medicine serves as Secretariat. Attendance is by invitation only. If you are interested attending or learning more, email [email protected].

Workshop Key Objectives

  1. Outline the challenge: Set out why sustainable access to PPE has been a persistently neglected area of preparedness, for both recurrent epidemic threats such as Ebola and respiratory pathogens with the potential for global catastrophic consequences, and why no consistent institutional home exists to map and close the associated financing gaps, particularly for low- or zero-market products such as Ebola ensembles and elastomeric respirators.
  2. Establish the case for action: Build a shared recognition that persistent PPE access gaps are the result of a structural market failure and represent a critical vulnerability at the center of catastrophic pandemic risk, warranting urgent and coordinated action now.
  3. Identify key gaps and flagship pilot projects to fill them: Take stock of the most consequential financing and coordination gaps in PPE access, and examine how the three regional flagship concepts can close them.
  4. Secure institutional commitments: Identify prospective institutional leads, technical partners, financing partners, and implementation partners for flagship pilot projects, and agree on practical next steps to advance implementation.
