Factors Affecting Clinician Well-Being and Resilience – Conceptual Model /clinicianwellbeing/resources/factors-affecting-clinician-well-being-and-resilience-conceptual-model/ Wed, 12 Sep 2018 12:43:18 +0000 /clinicianwellbeing/?post_type=resources&p=1166 This conceptual model was developed by the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being.

This conceptual model depicts the factors associated with clinician well-being and resilience; applies these factors across all health care professions, specialties, settings, and career stages; and emphasizes the link between clinician well-being and outcomes for clinicians, patients, and the health system. The model should be used to understand well-being, rather than as a diagnostic or assessment tool. The model will be revised as the field develops and more information becomes available.

The external and individual factors of the conceptual model are hyperlinked to corresponding landing pages on the Knowledge Hub, allowing users to navigate seamlessly between the two resources. By viewing the Conceptual Model on your computer, you will find that each factor is linked to a landing page within the Knowledge Hub. Each landing page provides additional information and resources.

Evaluating the Changing Financial Burdens for Graduating Pharmacists /clinicianwellbeing/resources/evaluating-the-changing-financial-burdens-for-graduating-pharmacists/ Wed, 21 Feb 2018 14:26:46 +0000 /clinicianwellbeing/?post_type=resources&p=703 Published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, the following study compares the financial burden of new practitioners in 2009 and 2014 by modeling net income from available salary, expenditure, and student loan data.Pharmacist salary and disposable income were higher on average in 2014 compared with 2009. Consumer expenditures were higher in 2014, offsetting the higher salary resulting in a 2014 discretionary income that was less than in 2009. Net income decreased from 2009 to 2014 for all pharmacy school types. Regardless of loan payment strategy, net incomes for pharmacists graduating from public and private institutions were less in 2014 compared with 2009.

Interpersonal Interactions, Job Demands and Work-Related Outcomes in Pharmacy /clinicianwellbeing/resources/interpersonal-interactions-job-demands-and-work-related-outcomes-in-pharmacy/ Mon, 19 Feb 2018 15:39:10 +0000 /clinicianwellbeing/?post_type=resources&p=604 Published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice, the study aims to examine the connection between job demands and work-related outcomes such as commitment, burnout, identity, and satisfaction in the field of pharmacy. Using the job demands-resources model (JD-R), one which posits that job demands and job resources are associated with burnout, the study proposes that burnout develops through (1) taxing job demands can lead to exhaustion over time and/or (2) a lack of resources makes it difficult to meet demands on the job which ultimately leads to disengagement. Many factors were implicated and found to be related to high-demand or low-demand and pleasant or unpleasant encounters. Study results suggest that adequate attention must be paid to the interplay between demands on the job and interactions with health care professionals to improve the quality of the pharmacist’s work-life.

Assessment of Burnout and Associated Risk Factors Among Pharmacy Practice Faculty in the United States /clinicianwellbeing/resources/assessment-of-burnout-and-associated-risk-factors-among-pharmacy-practice-faculty-in-the-united-states/ Mon, 19 Feb 2018 13:46:40 +0000 /clinicianwellbeing/?post_type=resources&p=520 Published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, the following study sought to measure the level of burnout among pharmacy practice faculty members at U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy and to identify factors associated with burnout. Using a cross-sectional, electronic, anonymous survey-design, the authors measured faculty burnout at U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey, which measures the following burnout dimensions: Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The study found that pharmacy practice faculty members at U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy are suffering from burnout, exhibited mainly through emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion was identified in 41.3% of participants and was higher in women, assistant professors, and those without a hobby. Students in Gainesville (founding campus) and the Jacksonville, Orlando, and St. Petersburg distance campuses were surveyed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory.
