A national study of US surgeons who were members of the American College of Surgeons was conducted to explore personal and professional characteristics, career satisfaction, quality of life, and burnout. This study found that approximately 40% of US surgeons experienced symptoms of burnout, and substantial numbers also experienced symptoms of depression and/or poor mental quality of life.
