Please Put on Your Own Oxygen Mask Before Assisting Others: A Call to Arms to Battle Burnout

Atallah et al. write about the prevalence of burnout in obstetrician/gynecologists and draw attention to burnout’s downstream consequences, insidious nature, contagiousness, and relationship to depression. The dearth and fragmentation of solutions implemented warrant an aggressive and multi-pronged approach at all levels. Factors to evaluate solutions should include external and internal factors, feasibility, impact and cost. The paper suggests focus on cognitive-behavioral therapy, enhanced communication, physician well-being programs, improving work conditions, and/or advocacy efforts.
