Latent Burnout Profiles: A New Approach to Understanding the Burnout Experience
Leiter’s research published in Burnout Research uses latent profile analysis to identify multiple person-centered profiles across the burnout-engagement continuum as assessed by the dimensions of Maslach Burnout Inventory. The analysis founded five profiles: Burnout as high on all three dimensions, Engagement as low on all three, Overextended as high only on exhaustion, Disengaged is high on cynicism only, and Ineffective is high on inefficacy only. One of the inferences made from the data is that exhaustion alone ought not be a proxy for burnout. Further implications are made for theory, research, and interventions.
